Using StudyDog

StudyDog is a hugely effective tool in helping children learn to read. It is convenient, fun and engaging for children and parents alike. Your child will have the freedom to work alongside StudyDog, learning to read, from the convenience of your home computer. As a parent, you will want to know how to best use the StudyDog program to meet the reading goals you have set for your child.

Frequency of Use

For our reading program to be the most effective, we recommend that your child complete 4-5 lessons each week. This allows for enough time to absorb the skills they are learning and to practice them. Each lesson takes approximately 15 minutes and the StudyDog characters will often have several lessons that cover a particular reading skill.

Report Cards

StudyDog also gives you access to a report card that shows how well your child is doing overall in their lessons. You may also see which particular lessons your child has mastered, which ones need more work, which ones are not yet complete and which ones they have not tried yet. There are indicators which show which lessons have met mastery (a 75% or better) and which lessons have not yet met mastery.

Reading Practice

A key component to learning the essential skills for reading is practice. Our program is set up for children to repeat lessons until they have a strong grasp of the skill and on our main page, you will know what lessons or skills your child is having the most difficulty with. Once the child has mastered the skill, they can move on with other skills.

Sequential Skill Areas and Lessons

Please note: Although your children may pick and choose the lessons they wish to do, we have set up our lessons to be developmentally appropriate as reading skills are cumulative on prior skills. We suggest that you have your children use the program in the order listed. Also, it is helpful if your child completes all the lessons within one skill area i.e.: the alphabet so that they have a firm grasp of the reading skill covered.

Gauging Progress

If your child is having difficulty with a particular skill area, have them practice that skill with the corresponding lessons with StudyDog. Check their progress report a few times each week to gauge their progress over all of the lessons.

Pace your child

Challenge your child to do their best but give them the time to achieve it. Learning how to read must not be rushed so please pace your child for best results.

Reading with your Child

Do not forget about the importance of simply reading with your child. Reading aloud or letting your child read a simple book to you is an excellent way to practice the skills they learn with StudyDog.
